What the Fellowship Covers

Eligibility Criteria for the 2025 Fellowship

To be considered, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a PhD programme at an African university.
  • Have completed the first year of their PhD by December 2024.
  • Have a background in subjects such as Economics, Sociology, Political Science, Science and Technology Policy, Geography, History, or Development Studies.
  • STEM applicants may also apply if their work incorporates a social science perspective.
  • Have sufficient English language skills (proof may be required).
  • Be working on a PhD topic related to Innovation and Development.
  • Submit a one-page application (500 words) outlining your background, motivation, and anticipated outcomes from the fellowship.

Application Process

To apply for the AfricaLics PhD Visiting Fellowship, submit the following documents:

  1. Outline of your current PhD project and planned training activities (maximum 5 pages).
  2. A Curriculum Vitae (CV), including details of PhD courses completed.
  3. A letter of support from your PhD supervisor, confirming you will have completed your upgrade or probation by December 2024.
  4. A letter of support from your university administration.
  5. Copies of your Bachelor’s and Master’s certificates.
  6. One writing sample (either an article or chapter) from your PhD programme.

No passport copy is required at the application stage. Visa arrangements will be handled later with support from AfricaLics and the University of Johannesburg.
